A former psychology professor at the University of Nebraska-Kearney was sentenced Wednesday for possession of child pornography. U.S. Senior District Judge Richard Kopf sentenced 56-year-old Joseph Benz of Kearney to 5 years probation and payment of nearly $10,000 in restitution to numerous victims whose abuse was documented in the child pornography. The U.S. Attorney’s Office says Benz will also be required to register as a sex offender for the remainder of his life.

The Nebraska Attorney General’s Office led the investigation that revealed Benz had been downloading the child pornography since at least 2008. When searching his residence, investigators discovered a computer that was actively running and downloading child pornography. During a three month period in 2013, investigators were able to retrieve more than 6,000 child pornography files from Benz’s computer. More than 20,000 video and image files of child pornography were identified from a number of external hard drives and flash drives that were also seized in the search.
