A former Gering man has been sentenced to life in prison for the 2016 murder of his wife Molly Nickal.
40-year-old Gary Nickal was found guilty of 1st Degree Murder on Thursday in Jefferson County District Court. Just one day later, he was sentenced to life in prison- without the chance of parole.
Nickal shot his wife twice with a pump-action shotgun on April 28, 2016 at their Westminster home. Their three children were at the home at the time of the murder.
Two days before Molly was murdered, she had contacted a divorce lawyer and had sought sole custody of the children. On April 28th, Gary Nickal ambushed Molly in the bathroom and shot her to death.
A two-and-a-half week trial took place in Jefferson County District Court, and the jury deliberated for three hours- rejected an insanity defense- and returned the guilty verdict on Thursday. Following the return of the jury’s verdict, the parties requested sentencing the next morning. He was sentenced to life in prison on Friday by Chief Judge Philip McNulty.
Nickal was a longtime Gering resident before moving to Minnesota, and later Colorado.
