Embattled Nebraska senator declines to appear before panel

A Nebraska state senator is declining an invitation to speak before a legislative committee that is considering disciplinary action against him for having cybersex on a state laptop.

An attorney for state Sen. Bill Kintner sent a letter to the Legislature’s Executive Board, saying he advised his client not to appear at a public hearing on Monday.

Attorney J.L. Spray says it’s unclear to him what authority the committee has to discipline the Papillion lawmaker, so an on-the-record discussion would be ill-advised. The Nebraska Accountability and Disclosure Commission has already fined Kintner $1,000 for misuse of state property.

A coalition of conservative activists also gathered at the Capitol to defend Kintner, alleging that some lawmakers want to get rid of him because he blocks their agendas.
