An unconventional driving lesson results in a car plunging through the wall of a home and causing tens of thousands of dollars worth of damage.

Scottsbluff Police and Fire Departments were dispatched to a home on West 40th Street at 4:43 p.m. Tuesday after receiving a call about the accident.

Captain Tony Straub says 29-year-old Matthew Gonzalez had his 13-year-old step-daughter on his lap attempting to teach her to drive. The teen operated the gas pedal, which caused the 2004 Dodge Durango to leave the roadway and crash through an apartment on West 40th Street.

Two residents were in the home at the time the vehicle crashed through their wall and received minor injuries from flying debris. Straub says the estimated damage to the building was $25,000 and an additional $3,000 in damage to the Durango.

Nobody in the vehicle was injured as a result of the crash, however Gonzales was cited for Reckless Driving.
