Bluffs council takes no action on proposed hotel occupation tax

The Scottsbluff City Council Monday evening elected not to take any action on a  proposed ordinance that would create a 4% hotel occupation tax that would be used to fund infrastructure improvements in the city.

Clarence Gealy, representing Hampton Inn & Suites ownership, told the council that adding the 4% tax to the 4% county lodging tax already being imposed on the industry would not only be unfair, but would drive away commerce.

Even though the ordinance would have to be read before the council three times before passage, they decided to take more time to work with the hotel operators and others in finding other possible funding solutions for the needed infrastructure improvements.
