Area law enforcement officers were all on hands on deck Friday night, after being dispatched to Mitchell after a person claimed he shot his girlfriend and had a pipe bomb.

Mitchell Police Chief Mike Cotant says around 10 p.m., a person called the Communications Center, said his name was “George,” and that he had a pipe bomb and had shot his girlfriend.

When they arrived to the address in the 1200 block of Center Avenue, people lived there but there was nothing out of the ordinary going on. Chief Cotant says it appeared to be a hoax phone call, but the area was cordoned off until the situation was deemed 100% safe.

Cotant says¬†Mitchell Police Officers Preston and Murphy were assisted by the Scotts Bluff County Sheriff’s Office, Nebraska State Patrol, Morrill Police Department, Scottsbluff Police Department, and Mitchell Fire and Rescue.

The investigation into who the caller was continues, but at this time no arrests have been made. Possible charges could include false reporting and threatening the use of explosives or placing a false bomb.
