Almost 170 people turned out for Norfolk Family YMCA’s new $11 million addition Groundbreaking on Thursday. Executive Director Randy Hagedorn. “We’re currently in a 75,000 sq. ft facility that we’ve outgrown. And we’re building on 106,000 sq. ft, which is going to be a lower level weightroom and an upper level cardio area with an elevator.”
Hagedorn says there will also be an indoor field turf, two more gyms, an indoor playground, two more locker rooms, and four family locker rooms.
He adds there will also be a three lane track above the 40 X 80 fieldhouse.
The new weight and cardio rooms will be much bigger than the current ones, according to Hagedorn. “Our current weightroom is like 1,600 sq. ft. This is going to be 4,300 just for the free weight area. And our current cardio area is about 4,000 sq. ft. The cardio area and the new addition’s going to be 8,000 sq. ft.”
Hagedorn says the rooms will have the full gamut of equipment. “We’re going to have dumbbells and benches and squat racks and free weights, and there will be universal machines, cable crossovers in our weightroom. Just about anything you can mention. And then in the cardio room we’re going to have treadmills, ellipticals, regular bikes, incumbent bikes, steppers, about any type of cardio you can mention also.”
Hagedorn says they hope to get close to having the addition completed by the end of the year.
