On February 9, 2015 Lincoln County Sheriff’s deputies received a call from a Heartwell, NE. subject claiming he was a victim of an internet scam. The victim advised he answered an ad on Craigslist to lease pasture ground in Lincoln County, NE. The victim set up a meeting with the advertiser in Sutherland, NE. on February 6, 2015 to view the property.

The victim met with thirty three year old Riley J. Hubert of North Platte. Mr. Hubert led the victim to an area north of Sutherland and showed him some open range land. Mr. Hubert said he was leasing the land and wanted to sub-lease it for summer grazing of cows. The victim and Mr. Hubert settled on a price for leasing the land and contract was written. The first half of the lease was paid a sum of $19,500.00 to Mr. Hubert.

After a few days the victim became suspicious about the lease and he contacted law enforcement. Deputies spoke with the victim and found that Mr. Hubert did not have the original lease on the pasture land; the land owner had no contact with Mr. Hubert.

Deputies found Mr. Hubert had purchased a pickup with part of his monies and fled to Cheyenne, WY. Deputies asked Cheyenne Police Department to look for Mr. Hubert and an arrest warrant was obtained for him. Mr. Hubert was arrested in Cheyenne, WY. on February 12, 2015. Upon his arrest Mr. Hubert had a large amount of cash on him and numerous items recently purchased.

Mr. Hubert signed extradition paperwork and was transported to the Lincoln County Detention Center on February 16, 2015. Mr. Hubert had recently bonded out of the Lincoln County Detention Center for similar scams. That bond has been revoked. Investigation continues.
