Nebraska state college system breached

The Nebraska State College System now says last week's computer hacking into the Nebraska Student Information System (NeSIS) for the 4 campuses of the University of Nebraska also extended to the 3 state colleges as well.

College System Chancellor Dr Stan Carpenter says the initial investigations in the May 23 security at NU indicated only its system was affected, but that he was told this Wednesday that the ongoing investigation revealed the breach also included data from Chadron State and the other two state colleges.

Although an undergraduate suspect has been identified, there have been no arrests. Carpenter says none of its data had been downloaded as was the case with the university.

Carpenter says employees were notified of the breach Friday afternoon, and that the NSCS has established a website about the breach that can be accessed from the websites of all 3 colleges as well as from the NSCS website. The university has set up a 7-day a week toll-free number to pass information to those affected by the breach in its system.

In light of the security issue, Carpenters and other NSCS officials are encouraging employees and students to be vigilant about reviewing their personal information.
