Heineman addresses speculation on possible tax changes

Governor Dave Heineman says everyone should have patience on what he may or may not propose at the start of the new year concerning the state's taxes.

Already some groups are organizing against a possible repeal of sales tax exemptions, including the exemption on groceries, fearing "the worst" when the Governor makes his proposal. Heineman told reporters Monday during a statewide conference call with reporters that everyone needs to quit speculating on what he might do because he won't have anything to announce until mid-January. .

eineman did say he will once again push for elimination of the state's inheritance tax, a move counties oppose because the revenue is used to help fund local operations. Heineman also indicated he will likely propose modification of the state's tax rates again, saying it is unfair those who make just over $50,000 a year have the same tax rate as billionaire Warren Buffet.
