Heineman pushes for change in Nebraska electoral votes

Governor Dave Heineman says Nebraska's system in which it splits its five electoral votes needs to change. Nebraska gives two of its votes to the statewide winner, and then splits the remaining three on the results in the three congressional districts.

Heineman told reporters during a press conference Tuesday that the state needs to go back to giving all of its electoral votes to the presidential candidate who has the most overall vote

Heineman believes the splitting of votes is partisan, allowing the Democrats to have an opportunity in a Republican state to gain an electoral vote or two and change the margin on the state's vote from 5-0 to 4 1. In 2008, President Obama gained the electoral vote from the second congressional district after doing campaigning in the Omaha area.
