Nelson: Amendments to postal bill should keep Neb. rural offices open

The Senate today is making its way through over forty amendments to a bill that attempts to reform the U.S. Postal Service. Senator Ben Nelson says many of the amendments deal with the criteria for the closure of rural post offices, including how close neighboring post offices are and even locating local postal services at businesses.

Nelson says the bill tries to move the Postal service into the modern age, maintaining it needs to continue six day service and attempt to offer even more services not less.

Nelson also opposes closure of processing centers, like the one in Alliance, that results in longer delivery time. Nelson believes the criteria that will be adopted in the amendments to the bill will keep rural post offices open in Nebraska, including several in the panhandle targeted for closure.

Nelson also believes when the measure comes up for a vote, possibly later today, it will pass
