Tariff Elimination a Sticking Point in T-TIP Talks

The European Union - when exchanging tariff offers with the U.S. in the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership talks - publicly announced its unwillingness to eliminate tariffs on beef, poultry and pork. EU Trade Minister Karl De Gucht also stated the EU will not change its legislation regarding beef hormones and the feed additive ractopamine. According to the National Pork Producers Council - the EU is the second largest market in the world for pork consumption and represents a tremendous market opportunity for U.S. pork exports. NPPC believes tariffs should be eliminated on all products including pork. Iowa State University Economist Dermot Hayes says removal of all EU barriers would significantly increase U.S. pork exports to the EU - creating more than 17-thousand U.S. jobs
