Johanns: Sebelius' Absence at Hearing "Unbelievable"

WASHINGTON – U.S. Sen. Mike Johanns (R- Neb.) today criticized Health and Human Service (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius for failing to appear before a Senate Appropriations Subcommittee hearing on the HHS budget request for Fiscal Year 2015.

Instead of answering to the Senate panel on the decisions made under her watch for the last five-and-a-half years, Johanns said Sebelius's absence is indicative of the Administration's lack of transparency and accountability regarding Obamacare.

Johanns said, "Last month a nonpartisan Congressional Research Service report found that the Administration has failed to meet more than half – more than half – of the 83 statutory deadlines required under Obamacare. She's the Secretary. I should have the right to ask about that.

Additionally, Johanns was unable to question Sebelius as to why the agency has not sufficiently outlined how funding was used to implement Obamacare's exchanges in this year's budget request as required by law. This requirement, originally offered by Johanns, was included in the final appropriations package last year.
