Farm Bill Process Steady, But Slow

Senator Mike Johnanns anticipates the Senate will begin tackling the 2013 Farm Bill very soon. While he wished the process was already underway, he doesn't think the schedule for markup is slipping. In a weekly conference call with reporters, Johanns believes committee members are being proactive in working through issues and laying the necessary steps for the bill to move forward.

Johanns hopes markup begin in May. get a bill to the Senate floor and passed. He also would like to see a bill come out of the House of Representatives, so we get the bill to the conference committee, before we run out of time.

Unlike last year, Johann says new Top Senate Ag Republican Thad Cochran wants to go slow but he doesn't see that hindering the process.

The House and Senate have a limited amount of time to write the five year legislation as the 2008 farm bill extension will expire in September.
