AFIA Submits Comments on Animal Food Rule
The American Feed Industry Association has submitted comments to the Food and Drug Administration on the Food Safety Modernization Act rule regarding animal food. AFIA Senior Vice President of Legislative and Regulatory Affairs Richard Sellers says AFIA and its membership are extremely satisfied with the comments generated during the brief comment period. Given time constraints - Sellers says AFIA focused primarily on how the rule would impact the many varied segments of the industry to strive for practical and easily understood requirements by the industry, FDA and state investigators that will inspect and audit the new requirements. A main focus area for AFIA is the Current Good Manufacturing Practices. AFIA believes the practices should be more practical and less prescriptive to allow the industry to be more innovative and have a better understanding as it's the first time many companies will use the practices. AFIA also requests FDA simplify the terms and concepts in the rule. AFIA will work to submit ongoing comments to FDA as it moves forward in the comment review process and work to achieve the overall goal of ensuring safe animal food. The final rule is expected by August 30th of 2015.
