Senate Ag Leaders Express Confidence Heading into Recess
As Senators headed home for the Memorial Day break - Senate Agriculture Committee Chair Debbie Stabenow and Ranking Member Thad Cochran expressed confidence the Senate will pass a new farm bill in June. Cochran said in a news release that the Senate had made true progress in developing what can be a very important contribution toward a legislative framework to help enable American farmers to compete in the international marketplace and to sustain the jobs that flow from their work throughout the country. Cochran said the bill is a job creator and a step toward strengthening the economy in rural America and in municipalities throughout the country. There is also an immigration bill headed for the Senate floor - and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said whether the Senate continues on the farm bill or switches to the immigration reform measure will depend on whether Stabenow and Cochran reach agreement on a finite number of amendments.
