Johanns blasts new Labor Secretary
Nebraska's senior U.S. Senator blasted the country's new Labor Secretary minutes before the Senate on a party line vote confirmed President Obama's nomination of Thomas Perez to the position.
Perez is the son of Dominican immigrants who now heads the Justice Department's civil rights division. Democrats praise him as an aggressive advocate of voting and civil rights laws. On a conference call with reporters Thursday Johanns said Perez is a liberal who selectively enforces laws according to his political views.
This is the third top administration vacancy that the Senate has filled in three days. It is part of a bipartisan deal in which Republicans agreed to stop blocking nomination votes in exchange for Democrats agreeing to stop trying to change Senate rules to weaken the minority GOP's powers. The Senate vote was 53-46.
