Huskers getting ready for Ohio State
Following a win over Purdue last night, Nebraska looks to advance to the semifinals of the Big Ten Men's Basketball Tournament, as the Huskers take on No. 10 Ohio State Friday at 5:30 p.m. CT.
The Huskers, the No. 10 seed, improved to 15-17 with the day's only upset in the Big Ten Tournament, knocking off seventh-seeded Purdue, 57-55, as Shavon Shields (19 points and six rebounds) and Brandon Ubel (16 points, eight rebounds and five assists) combined for 34 of the Huskers' 57 points. Nebraska took over the game in the opening minutes of the second half, using a 9-0 run to build and 11-point lead and held on in the final minutes. Nebraska held the Boilermakers to 40 percent shooting and, including 2-of-12 from 3-point range, to snap a five-game losing streak to the Boilermakers. More impressively, the Huskers won despite getting a combined 14 points from Dylan Talley and Ray Gallegos, a total that was nearly half their average heading into the Big Ten Tournament.
The Huskers (15-17) will now look to reach the semifinals of a conference tournament for the first time since 2006 when they take on the No. 2 seed Ohio State (23-7) this afternoon. The Buckeyes are playing some of their best basketball of the year, bringing a five-game win streak to Chicago, including victories over Michigan State and Indiana.
The Huskers have dropped four straight to Ohio State over the last two seasons, but played well in a 63-56 loss to the Buckeyes in the last meeting on Feb. 2 in Lincoln. NU is 2-8 all-time against Ohio State (0-4 since joining the Big Ten) and have lost seven straight meetings since a win in the 1985 Sun Bowl Classic. With a win, the winner takes on Michigan State or Iowa Saturday afternoon in the second semifinal.
